How to Read a Steel Pipe Mill Test Report (MTR)

A Mill Test Report (MTR) is the “birth certificate” of a steel pipe. For quality assurance professionals, the ability to interpret this document is vital for verifying that a product meets project specifications and safety standards.

An MTR typically contains three core sections: Material Identification, Chemical Analysis, and Mechanical Properties.

First, check the Material Identification. This includes the heat number (traceable to the specific batch of steel), the size, weight, and the specification (e.g., ASTM A53). Cross-referencing the heat number on the MTR with the stenciling on the physical pipe is the only way to guarantee authenticity.

Second, examine the Chemical Composition. You will see percentages for Carbon (C), Manganese (Mn), Phosphorus (P), and Sulfur (S). For weldability, the Carbon Equivalent (CE) is crucial. A CE value that is too high indicates a risk of brittleness after welding.

Third, look at the Mechanical Properties. This lists the Tensile Strength, Yield Strength, and Elongation. Compare these values against the minimum requirements of the ASTM or API standard listed. If the Yield Strength is lower than the standard, the pipe is structurally unfit for its intended grade. Mastering the MTR ensures you never install sub-standard material in a critical application.
