How to Properly Store Steel Pipes to Prevent Atmospheric Corrosion

Even the highest quality steel pipe can degrade if stored improperly before installation. Atmospheric corrosion—often referred to as “rust”—can pit the surface of the steel, leading to wall loss and contamination of the fluid being transported.

The first rule of storage is elevation. Pipes should never be placed directly on the ground. Soil contains moisture and corrosive minerals that accelerate oxidation. Use wooden dunnage or “stulls” to keep the pipes at least 6 inches off the surface. This also prevents the pipes from sitting in standing water during rain.

Stacking must be done carefully to prevent distortion and for safety. Use a “square stack” or “pyramid stack” method, ensuring that the bottom layer is securely blocked to prevent rolling. If the pipes have a specialized coating, use padded spacers between layers to avoid metal-to-metal contact that could chip the protective film.

For long-term storage, End Caps are essential. They prevent debris, rodents, and moisture from entering the pipe interior. If the pipes are being stored in a salt-air environment (near the coast), a thin layer of light oil or a specialized “slushing compound” should be applied to the bare ends to provide a temporary moisture barrier.
